Here at Tattoosday, we're celebrating Halloween by posting the spookiest tattoo seen in the last month or so. Well, maybe not the spookiest, but certainly the most holiday-related tattoo:
This was offered up by Robert, who I met in Borders Penn Plaza last month. And yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, that is Frankenstein driving a Chevy (that's the stick shift he's gripping). Robert credits Adel at Addiction NYC with this tattoo.
Thanks to Robert for helping us celebrate Halloween here on Tattoosday!

Ashlee Channels Snow White
This work in progress is on Ashlee's arm:
The tattoo features Snow White at the top of the arm, with the witch's hand proffering an apple, wrapping around the arm:
Ashlee explained that the tattoo is commenting on how superficial the world is and how the idea of Beauty was the downfall of the title character, at least until she was rescued from her poison-induced slumber.
The tattoo is the work of Eric at King Pin Tattoos in Harker Heights, Texas. Work from Kingpin appeared previously in August 2008 on Tattoosday here.
Thanks to Ashlee for sharing her work with us here on Tattoosday!

Popular Japanese Kanji Tattoo
Kanji tattoo designs come from a Japanese script, originating within Chinese characters. Kanji tattoos in essence, are ideograms depicting abstract ideas such as spirit, belief, love, loyalty, trust or the conveyance of any individual significance. In the ongoing spirit of competition, some tattoo bearers and artists alike, envelope their characters with various pictures to round out the tattoo.
Whether looking to write a special name or to revere particular scenery, Kanji tattoos have one intention - to make a statement even if shrouded in mystery. The objective is to gain attention and ask questions, perhaps an icebreaker in conversation with strangers.
The script of Kanji has given rise to prominence to both Japanese and Chinese linguistics among admirers of tattoo art. However, those who engrave their bodies with the script, at times lack real reverence for such complex language and culture. It is worth understanding a thing or two about the script and the culture before inking your body with characters that mean something far different from what you intended.
Kanji tattoo designs rely on the characters being correctly oriented to convey specific meaning, and it is worth noting that Kanji is not a proper interpretation of script for writing foreign names. Translating an English name to Kanji may yield a translation, but the translation will be superficial, rather than accurate.
You should also keep in mind that in Japan, the culture is such that the typical Japanese do not share the same fondness for tattoos. Tattoos are usually associated with a shadowy group of characters known as the Yakuza, or Japanese mafia. If you ever visit Japan, you will notice that most bath houses forbid entrance by those showing tattoos. This is the polite, non-confrontational way of conveying that the Yakuza are not welcome on the premises.

Nesting Dolls and a Zombie, Courtesy of Kristin
Last month, I ran into Kristin at the Penn Plaza Borders store.
She has ten tattoos, but the piece on her shin was the first one I spotted:
These Russian nesting dolls represents the friendship Kristin has with her friend Kyle (thus, the merging of their names into "Kryle").
It was tattooed by Bret from Electric Tattoo in Pasadena, Maryland.
Kristin also shared another tattoo, one certainly more appropriate for our current season. Check out this amazing tattoo:
This cool zombie piece was inked by Kike Castillo at Timmy Tattoo in Huntington, New York.
Kristin says that Kike is one of her favorite artists and she is happy for him to provide her with great body art. "He needed someone," she told me, referring to this particular tattoo, and "I'm always game". Tattoo artists love clients that let them do their thing, and you can tell with this great piece of art.
Thanks to Kristin for sharing her cool tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Temporary Tattoo - Best Choice Before Getting Ink Tattoo
Temporary tattoo designs offer a great way to test out a tattoo design before getting permanently inked. When you have finally decided to get a tattoo, often the hardest part is deciding on what kind of design to get.
There are so many different kinds of Temporary Tattoo Designs that you can have put on all parts of your body, that it can take months or even years to narrow it down. It is too bad that there isn't a way to "try on" a tattoo, and see how it looks on you.

Dragon and Phoenix Temporary Tattoo
But, there is! You can get temporary tattoo designs put on your body and see what your friends and family think before you ever walk into a tattoo parlor to have the real one done. Temporary tattoo designs are a step above of the rub-on tattoos that you might get at a novelty store. These are full-sized, life-like temporary ones that look just like the real thing.
In fact, most people will think that the Temporary Tattoo Designs is real and that is part of why they are such a good idea. It gives you a real opportunity to gauge the reaction of people before you have ink injected under your skin.
When you are thinking of getting a tattoo, temporary tattoo designs are perhaps the best way to try on a tattoo and see how it looks and where you want it on your body.

His other tattoo is an armband of lyrics reading "It was the 15th of June when she walked in my life, it was the first time someone said hello with her eyes".

Amanda's Phoenix
Amanda has two tattoos, one of which she shared with me at the end of August in the Penn Plaza Borders store.
This is the tattoo she designed:
Amanda was inspired by the "compelling mythology of phoenixes" and had Bobby at Modern Age Tattoo in Nanuet, New York, translate the design into the final product.
The quote, in Latin, "post tenebras lux" means "After darkness, light". This mirrors the life cycle of the mythological phoenix who dies, bound in flame, only to be reborn from the ashes. Clicking here will display the vast array of phoenixes that have appeared on Tattoosday previously.
In other words, even when things appear their darkest, affirmation is just within reach.
Thanks to Amanda for sharing this cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Gary's Three Knuckles Speak Volumes
I spotted Gary standing at the top of some escalators in Penn Station. As I passed him, I noticed he had knuckle tattoos so I stopped to ask him about them:
Gary explained that they are Korean characters
that translate to "Soo Bahk Do," or "The Way of the Striking Hand".
Soo Bahk Do is a form of martial arts that originated in Korea.
This unassuming gentleman has studied the form for seventeen years and is a third degree black belt. Gary studied at East Winds Karate in Port St. John, Florida.
The tattoo was inked at a shop on Eight Avenue in Bayonne, New Jersey.
Thanks to Gary for sharing his "striking" tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Dragonfly Tattoo Designs
Dragonfly tattoo are for individuals who are searching for something beautifully offbeat. They are popular for many different types of people because they can be made so that they are feminine and colourful, or they can be drawn so that they are quite bug like, scary, dark, and masculine. Male or female, masculine or feminine, dragonfly tattoos are great choices for just about everyone who wants something just a little bit unusual.
Dragonfly tattoos are perfect for just about any part of the body. They are often basic images that provide a lot of visual impact. Dragonfly tattoos are one of the most popular tattoo styles available. This type of tattoo is actually quite plain to draw, so even if you are not an artist you can help design the dragonfly that you'd like to put on your body so it's unique to your personal style and preferences.
Dragonfly tattoos have a quite mystical quality to them. A fairy tale quality that may be quite beautiful, but in a more distinct way than a fairy or butterfly image. Dragonfly tattoo designs can often be given a stark tribal look, for example, that's quite masculine. They are very popular today but for many years dragonflies were condemned and revolted in the western world. The Dragonfly has always been a mystery for the west and it is often assumed to be related to which craft and black magic.
There are many myths in western folk lore where dragonflies would do nasty things to little children and they were definitely associated with the devil. In America for several centuries, dragonflies were believed to have the power to stitch closed the eyes and mouths of sleeping children. People have always assumed dragonflies to be related to black magic in the western world. For over a thousand years dragonflies were considered to be 'witch animals' and were exterminated wherever possible.
Dragonfly tattoo designs can be seen landing everywhere on peoples arms, shoulders, chests, hips and lower backs. Dragonfly tattoo designs are wildly popular with women. They are fun and colourful while at the same time being a little more unique and unexpected. Dragonfly tattoo designs give you the same freedom of making a colourful tattoo perfect for those rather flirty locations like the hip or lower back and is indicative of a person who cannot be easily categorized, just like the creature that inspired it.
If you go to your local tattoo parlor to discuss dragonfly tattoos, the chances are that they will also have ample ideas for tattoo designs. The design may be a small sexy secret or a large tribute to the wild and free spirit that the dragonfly represents. Dragonflies are often seen combined with other mystical designs such as fairies, stars, skulls, arrows and moons.
Dragonfly tattoos are a perfect representation for anyone who wants to express their free spirit. The dragonfly inhabits air and water realms in it's larval and adult stages and passes the influence of both these elements on to the wearer. The most sought after colours for dragonfly tattoos are black, grey, blue, green, orange, yellow, red, white, violet and purple.
The dragonfly tattoos are adopted by both men and women, young and old though they are often referred to as quite cute, sexy and feminine. Their universal appeal in conjunction with the great variety of styles and colours that they can be portrayed in means that Dragonfly Tattoos are just going to get more popular in the future.
